The god of destiny sometimes plays a funny prank, and it was as another instance of such that the epilogue of this mysterious withdrawal from Kiska was written.

Even after the Japanese garrison force entirely deserted the fateful island, it continued to exert an influence on the minds of the invaders for another eighteen days or so. A full-fledged landing was necessary to discover its absence.

After customary minesweeping and bombarding, the landing party hit the beach midway on the western side of the island early on the morning of 16 August. No enemy resistance was met at all, of course.

The bewilderment of the landing troops by the sight of no defenders on the island was described by a member of the special units as follows:
